The Salt seat was vacant after the death of MLA Surendra Singh Jeena. For the assembly by-election, the BJP has declared Mahesh Jeena, elder brother of Surendra Singh Jeena, as its candidate. Jina will file a nomination on March 30. This is the third time the BJP sympathy card has been played by giving Mahesh Jeena a ticket in Salt. Earlier, BJP legislator Magan Lal Shah had contested his wife Munni Devi Shah and his wife Chandra Pant on the death of Minister Prakash Pant.
