new Delhi. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed to implement new rules for packaged water and mineral water manufacturers. Certification of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been made mandatory for packaged water and mineral water manufacturers to obtain or register licenses. Under which the BIS certificate will be mandatory for companies selling mineral water (bottled water) from 1 April.

The rules will come into effect from April 1, 2021. FSSAI has sent a letter in this regard to the Food Commissioners of all states and union territories. In this, they have been asked to make the BIS certificate of companies making bottled water mandatory. This directive will come into effect from April 1, 2021.

License required before starting the business- The FSSAI said that under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2008, it would be mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) to obtain a license / registration before starting any food business. The regulator said that under the Food Safety and Standards (Restrictions and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, any person can sell packaged drinking water or mineral water only after the BIS certification mark.

Also, only after getting the BIS license, the Food Business Operators operators will be able to fill the annual returns online. These orders of the FSSAI will come into force from 1 April 2021.
