Jaswanti Jamnadas, a resident of Mumbai, first laid the foundation of Lijjat Papad in 1959 with her six friends. The purpose of these seven women behind starting it was not to start the industry or earn more money. Through this, she wanted to share her hand in her family’s expenses. Since these women were not very educated, they had to face many difficulties even while working outside the home. So, these Gujarati women planned to make papad and sell it, which they could make by staying at home. Jaswanti Jamnadas Popat decided that she and joined her Parvatiben Ramdas Chodani, Uzamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben Vithalani Papad. He was accompanied by another woman, who was entrusted with the task of selling papads.

With a loan of 80 rupees, women bought a sheen to make papad and also bought the necessary items to make papad. Initially, the women made four packets of papad and sold them to a businessman. After this, the merchant demanded more papad from the women. After this, the women started working day and night and the sales went on increasing by double. After this Vyapari asked to improve the quality of papad. In addition, he also helped in training these women about accounts, marketing etc. This group of these seven women became a cooperative system. Needy women above 18 years of age were added to it. Lijjat Papad’s business gave him an annual income of 6196 at that time and soon, thousands of women joined him in view.

Thousand crore turnover
Lijjat Papad has been awarded the Economic Equity’s Business Woman of the Year Award in 2002, the country’s best cottage industry award in 2003 and the Brand Equity Award in 2005 by the then President of the country, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The business of papad started with the borrowing of 80 rupees is today a shadow of the world and its turnover is about 100 crores rupees.
