The Ministry of Railways issued an official statement on Sunday, saying, Hazaribagh Town, which falls under Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state in Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway on May 15, is the 6000th station in the country where free Wi-Fi facilities can be accessed. It has the highest number of stations in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal with the highest Wi-Fi.

Indian Railways started its journey by providing Wi-Fi facility at Mumbai’s first railway station in January 2016. Subsequently, Midnapore station in West Bengal was the 5000th railway station to be equipped with this facility. After that, Hazaribagh became the 6000th railway station on 15 May. Also, on the same day, Jarapada station in Angul district of Odisha state was also connected with Wi-Fi facility.

Facility that fulfills the objective of Digital India

The Wi-Fi facility at the railway stations serves the objectives of the ambitious Digital India of the Government of India. The ministry says it will work to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban citizens. There is a provision of Wi-Fi facilities at railway stations on self-sustainable basis without any expense to the railways. This facility is provided with the help of RailTel, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. This work is being done in partnership with Google, DOT (under USOF), PGCIL and Tata Trusts.
