Farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra may prefer to grow soybeans over other kharif crops in the hope of better prices for the produce.

Indore. There may be a record production of soybean in the country this year. This can provide relief from costly imports of edible oils. Indore-based Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) has released an estimate of the national acreage of soybean to increase by 10 percent to around 132 lakh hectares during the current Kharif season.
Sopa’s chairman Davis Jain said that “we expect that this time the area under soybean in the country will increase by about 10 percent.” He told that during the Kharif season of the year 2020, soybean was sown in about 120 lakh hectares in the country, while its yield was around 105 lakh tonnes. “We feel that farmers, especially in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, would prefer to grow soybean over other kharif crops in the hope of better price for the produce,” Jain said.

Minimum support price of soybean increased by Rs 70 per quintalThe central government has fixed the minimum support price (MSP) of soybean at Rs 3,950 per quintal for the Kharif marketing season of 2021-22. This rate of MSP is Rs 70 per quintal more than the previous session. Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture had told in its estimate that this time there will be a bumper increase in the yield of oilseed crops. According to the ministry, this year oilseeds production can see an increase of more than 33 lakh 46 thousand tonnes. This time the production of oilseeds in the country is estimated to be 3 crore 65 lakh 65 thousand tonnes. Last year the yield of oilseeds was 3 crore 32 lakh 19 thousand tonnes.

Soybean yield can be more than 1 crore 34 lakh 14 thousand tonnes
This time there can be an increase in soybean yield. According to the third advance estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture released for the crop year 2020-21, the yield of Kharif soybean across the country may exceed 1 crore 34 lakh 14 thousand tonnes. Which was 1 crore 12 thousand tonnes during the same period last year. At the same time, rising prices of edible oil is being considered as a reason for the increase in the area of oilseed crops. The price of edible oil has increased drastically in the last one year. It is believed that this time the farmers have got a good price for oilseeds. For this reason, they are sowing heavily in Kharif season.
