The stellar direction and the meticulously done work produced a musical masterpiece that gained international recognition of a different kind than any other Indian film. The film was warmly received, and people around the world were impressed with Bhansali’s direction and the creation of Larger Than Life cinema. In fact, at the festival Standing Ovation to the film was also found.

Interestingly, Aishwarya, who made her Cannes debut with the film. He represented it again to an international audience in 2017 as a part of open air cinema. Apart from Cannes, Bhansali also won a nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 56th British Academy Film Awards and the film was ranked eighth in Time magazine’s ‘The 10 Greatest Movies of the Millennium’.
