New Delhi. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been successful in achieving the feat despite the challenges of COVID-19. More national highways are being constructed in India every day than before. The sharp increase in the construction of National Highways can be traced to the fact that now about 36.5 kms of National Highways are being constructed in India every day. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced this achievement achieved by his ministry from his Twitter handle.

Nitin Gadkari also reminded that India has already created a world record by building 2.5 km of four-lane concrete road and 26 km of single-lane bitumen road in just 21 hours in just 24 hours. To keep up with the pace at which India is building national highways, Gadkari said the need for supporting contractors, easing contract provisions, direct payments to sub-contractors and providing food and medical facilities to those working on site. Gadkari said the construction work maintains the standards as per the specifications of the Highest Indian Road Congress (IRC) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). A quality control zone has also been created to monitor the work of these roads. “As far as the quality of work is concerned, it is the responsibility of such consultants to ensure compliance with the provisions of the concession or contract agreement.

Earlier this week, Nitin Gadkari said that India has constructed a total of 2,284 km of national highways during the April-June period. This is more than 25 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Between April-June last year, India had built a total of 1,823 km of national highways in its network.

Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari had said that at present 2,112 national highway projects are going on across India. It is currently busy developing the Green National Highway Corridor Project (GNHCP), for which the Center had signed a loan agreement with the World Bank. The project will upgrade about 781 km of national highways passing through states like Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
