New Delhi. The GST Network has said that taxpayers who have not filed GST returns for two months till June 2021 or the quarter of June 2021 will not be able to generate e-way bill from August 15. Experts say that this move will help in increasing the GST collection in August, as the pending GST returns are expected to be filed.
Last year, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) suspended the moratorium on generation of electronic e-way bills for non-filers, giving compliance relief during the Covid pandemic.
GSTN told taxpayers, “The government has now decided to reinstate the ban on generation of e-way bills on the EWB portal for all taxpayers with effect from August 15.”
In this way, the system will check the returns filed after August 15, 2021 and prohibit the generation of e-way bills, if necessary.
AMRG & Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said that the GSTN has increased the pressure on all those who do not file GST returns and the moratorium on generation of e-way bills will bring many businesses to a standstill. Mohan said that this automatic punitive action will increase the tax in August.
Saket Patwari, Executive Director (Indirect Taxes), Nexdime said that with the situation slowly returning to normal, the tax administration is urging businesses to regularize GST compliance.
He said that it is an easy process to restart the e-way bill generation after filing the return.
