Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine say 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war captured during the Battle for Mariupol have been killed in a bombing by Ukraine.
At least 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed and 130 wounded by Ukrainian shelling at a prison in the city of Olenivka on Friday, according to Daniil Bezsonov, a spokesman for Russia-backed separatists in the Donetsk region. There has been no reaction from Ukraine on this incident yet.
Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner in Mariupol
Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner after a fierce battle for the Azov Sea Port of Mariupol in Ukraine. These prisoners were lodged in Azovstal Steel Mill.
These soldiers had saved the steel mill for about three months. But in May, Ukrainian troops surrendered after extremely aggressive attacks by Russia.
These prisoners of war were later taken to Donetsk, an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists, where they were held in several different prisons.
