Madrid. Another person died of monkeypox in Spain. This is the second case of monkeypox death in the last two days. The Health Ministry gave this information on Saturday. The ministry has not given much information about the dead. The first case of death due to this virus was reported on Friday. Since May, there have been more than 21,000 cases of monkeypox in about 80 countries of the world. 75 people have died due to this virus in Africa, most of them in Nigeria and Congo. One person has also been reported to have died of monkeypox in Brazil.

Spain’s Health Ministry said on Friday that 4,298 people have been infected with the virus in the country so far, of which about 3,500 are men who have had sex with other men. Only 64 of the infected are women. The ministry said that 120 people infected with monkeypox have been admitted to the hospital so far. Health Department officials said that under the Joint Vaccine Program of the European Union, the country has received 5,300 doses of the vaccine.

What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox. It was first detected in 1958 in monkeys kept for research. The first case of infection with monkeypox was reported in 1970. The disease occurs mainly in tropical rainforest regions of Central and West Africa and occasionally spreads to other regions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox usually presents with fever, rash and lumps and can lead to a variety of medical complications. Symptoms of the disease usually appear for two to four weeks, which go away on their own. Matters can also be serious. In recent times, the mortality ratio has been around 3-6 per cent, but it can be as high as 10 per cent. During the current spread of the infection, only two cases of death have come from Spain.

How is monkeypox infection spread?
Monkeypox is spread to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal or through material contaminated with the virus. It is believed that it is spread by animals such as rats, mice and squirrels. The disease is spread through wounds, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated material such as bedding. This virus is less contagious than smallpox and causes less severe illness. Health officials say that some of these infections can be transmitted through sexual contact. The WHO said it was also investigating a number of cases involving gay or bisexual people.
