Tragic accident in central Libya
Explosion after fire in fuel tanker
9 people died, 76 badly burnt
Cairo. A fuel tanker exploded after a fire broke out in central Libya on Monday, killing at least nine people and injuring 76 others. The authorities gave this information. According to the news of the state-run Libya News Agency, the incident took place in the central city of Benet Bayya, when the tanker overturned before it caught fire. The agency said residents of the area started collecting petrol despite warnings of a possible fire and explosion, which resulted in a large number of casualties.
Halima al-Mahri, a spokeswoman for the government medical center in the nearby town of Sabha, said the injured had been admitted to the hospital. Al-Mahri said at least 16 seriously injured were admitted to hospitals in the capital Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi. The hospital has released footage showing people receiving treatment for burns in the emergency ward. It is not yet known what caused the tanker to overturn.
