Situation may worsen due to 'provocative' steps against China: Russia's warning to America

Moscow. Amid tensions over Taiwan, Russia strongly supported China and warned the US on Friday that any “provocative” move could worsen the situation. Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of interference in Taiwan’s affairs during a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Thursday. When asked about this, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin’s presidential office, said that Russia strongly supports China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Peskov said, ‘We believe that no other country has the right to confuse everyone or take any provocative step.’ He cautioned the US against “disastrous” moves, saying at a time when the world is grappling with many issues, such behavior will only increase tensions “internationally”.

Peskov’s statement reaffirms the close ties between Russia and China that have been strengthened since the February 24 attack by Russian troops in Ukraine. China has so far not condemned Russia’s action, but has accused the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of provoking Russia.

The Chinese government has given no indication that talks between Xi and Biden discussed the proposed visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. However, Xi rejected the interference of external forces in the Taiwan matter. The Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “It is the strong desire of more than 1.4 billion Chinese people to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Those who play with fire will get burnt.
