Russia aims to overthrow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's government: Sergei Lavrov

Kyiv (Ukraine). As Russian artillery and planes continued to attack Ukrainian cities, Russia’s foreign minister said his country’s goal was to overthrow the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It seems that Russia has changed its aim. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s remarks came amid an effort by Ukraine to restore grain exports from its Black Sea ports. Resumption of food grains exports will help to overcome the shortage of food grains in the world.

Speaking at the Arab League conference in Cairo on Sunday, Lavrov said Russia was determined to help free Ukrainians “from the burden of this absolutely unacceptable regime”. Lavrov accused Ukraine and its Western allies of “propaganda” to ensure that Ukraine is “Russia’s all-time enemy.”

He said, ‘The Russian and Ukrainian people will continue to be together, we will certainly help the people of Ukraine to get rid of this regime which is absolutely anti-people and anti-history.’ Lavrov’s remarks are in stark contrast to statements from the Kremlin at the start of the war. Then Russian officials repeatedly said that they were not trying to overthrow Zelensky’s government.

Lavrov said that Russia was ready to negotiate an agreement to end hostilities in March itself, but Ukraine changed its position and announced its intention to eliminate Russia on the battlefield. “Western countries emphasized that Ukraine should not negotiate until Russia is defeated on the battlefield,” he said.
